The 49ers Signed KhaDarel Hodge, and That Tells You Everything About This Receiver Room

He is 31. He caught three passes last season. He is a genuinely excellent special teams player and I have no problem with the signing itself. What I have a problem with is that it is the fifth of August and we are already out here signing bodies because the ones we have keep leaving practice early.

Who he actually is, before anybody gets excited

KhaDarel Hodge went undrafted out of Prairie View A&M in 2018. He has been in the league eight years and he is still here, which by itself tells you something, because the NFL does not keep undrafted receivers around out of sentiment. He has stops with the Rams, the Browns, the Lions, and the last four years in Atlanta.

He has 67 catches in his entire career. Last season he played twelve games, started one, and caught three passes for 31 yards. So no, he is not walking in here to be the number two.

What he is, is one of the best gunners in football. He made the Pro Bowl as the NFC special teams representative after the 2024 season. He flies down on punt coverage, he blocks kicks, he plays the third phase like it matters. That is a real job and it wins you real games, and every year some November afternoon comes down to whether your punt team pinned somebody at the four or let them start at the 40.

And of course he played for Raheem Morris

Two of those four Atlanta seasons were under Raheem Morris, who is now running our defense. So this is the front office doing the thing every front office does: the coordinator vouches for a guy, the guy is available, the guy is cheap, sign the guy.

I actually like that. I like when a coach says "I know this player, he will do the work, he will not be a problem," and the team listens. Morris has already got that defense playing loose and happy. If he wants his special teams captain from Atlanta, fine. Give him his guy.

Now here is the part that makes me want to put my head through a wall

We are signing a 31-year-old special teams gunner in the first week of August because our receiver room has been shredded before a single snap of the regular season.

Pearsall is done for the year. Done. The kid we drafted in the first round, the kid who was finally supposed to be the answer, and his knee is going to cost him the entire season. Jauan Jennings has been in and out with a calf. Christian Kirk missed most of a week with a calf of his own. Every practice report reads like a hospital chart, and last week the answer was to go get Deebo back on a one-year deal, which, look, I am glad he is home, but do you understand what it means that our emergency plan was to re-sign a guy we traded away?

This is the same movie every single year. August: "most talented roster in football." September: three guys on the injury report. January: Purdy throwing to practice squad receivers behind a patchwork line while the national people explain to me that he was never that good anyway.

So what does Hodge actually mean

Three things, and be honest about all of them.

One: he gives them a healthy body who knows how to run an NFL practice. That has value in August when you physically do not have enough receivers to finish a session.

Two: he is legitimately upgrading the coverage units, and this team has quietly lost field position games it had no business losing.

Three: if KhaDarel Hodge is catching meaningful passes for the 49ers in December, something has gone very, very wrong, and we will all know it the second it happens.

Sign him, welcome him, and then go fix the actual problem

I have no complaints about the player. Good pro, good teammate, useful on Sundays, nothing to argue about. Welcome to the Bay.

My complaint is the pattern. You cannot keep building a roster that is spectacular in theory and made of glass in practice, and then act surprised in January when the whole thing folds. Deebo is back. Hodge is here. Pearsall is gone. It is August fifth.

Keep the guys we have on the field. That is the entire season. That has been the entire season for three years running and we still have not figured it out.
